Building Awareness: End Impunity

Note: This is a post to share crucial information about #InternationalDaytoEndImpunityforCrimesAgainstJournalists.

November 03, 2020

Yesterday was International Day to End Impunity for Crimes Against Journalists, and I wanted to share some important links and information about this day.

Freedom of press is crucial in keeping citizens well-informed, and journalists constantly risk their lives to fulfill this necessary role. It is important that we not only bring awareness to this issue, but we also urge government authorities to hold those who commit crimes against journalists responsible and keep investigations of killed journalists alive.

The United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO), along with DDB Paris, created the campaign #TruthNeverDies to commemorate this day and bring awareness to the number of journalists killed on the job, doing what their soul purpose as a journalist is: seeking out and exposing the truth. According to the U.S. Embassy in Georgia, “More than 1,500 journalists have been killed worldwide since the turn of the century, and in more than 85 percent of cases, the killers go unpunished.”

To learn more about impunity for crimes against journalists, click on any of the links above. Please read and share this op-ed written by Andrew Heslop: “A New Level of Audacity for Impunity and Journalist Murders.”

I will add more links below for more resources as I do more digging.
